Scaphopods have a shell shaped like a tusk, similar to that of an elephants tusks. They use their shell to burrow themselves into the sand, where they spend their adult lives. The mantle of the scaphapod serves the function of gills in obtaining oxygen from seawater. They feed primarily on foraminiferans.
